第二节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)

阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从2140各题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将选项标号涂黑。

It is common that people are not happy when no one listens to them and no one understands them. How often is this an important    21    in the failure of personal relationships? How often does it    22    broken homes? How often do we hear of a married couple who    23    to have communication ? It seems    24    must have gone wrong.

Differences in the opinions of two people give rise to    25   , and ways to reduce them are not easy to be    26   , but it is equally true to say that there should be a solution to every problem. Part of the solution to human conflicts is to    27    misunderstanding.

Misunderstanding often arises from a    28    of communication. Curiously enough, in a modern society where many means of communication such as the mobile phone have been developed, people are    29    faced with this problem. While there are more chances for personal contact,    30    through verbal(口头的)communication, many people find their listeners do not listen to them. It is    31    that something is wrong with their listening ability.

People may wonder    32    their listening ability is not satisfying when their hearing ability is physically good. This is a basic mistake we often make. Believing that hearing comes to us naturally, we think that listening does not require much    33   . However, experts in the field of communication are quick to    34    this belief. In their view, listening requires hard work and energy. When people are listening, they have quicker heartbeats. So they think good listening is not as    35    as it might seem.

To become a good listener begins with concentration. If not, sometimes the listener tends to    36    part of what is being said. Since each person has his own interests, when the speaker talks about something that is    37    no personal interest to him, he would “   38    the talking”.    39    he might respond with gestures, his mind is wandering. This automatic control has its effect especially when the topic is    40   .

26. A. blocked                      B. led                           C. found                       D. made

31. A. obvious                      B. necessary                  C. vital                         D. strange

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。

A

I work in a big corporation. During school, I never took part in any group discussion or stage program. Therefore, I never knew what stage fear was.

Around four years ago, I received a call from the principal of our school to ask me to speak at a weekly “Parents View” talk in the assembly(集会)the next morning. After the call, my whole body became feverish and panic. The whole night, I could not sleep. Many negative thoughts were coming. One of them was to call the principal with regret, and told him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some courage. I thought, if I missed this opportunity, surely, the school would never invite me again to any of their programs. So, I decided to go and speak. The next day when my turn came, my legs started shaking and my mouth went dry. I was not aware of where I was standing and what I was reading. That was the day when I realized my biggest weakness: public speaking.

After my speech, I met with the principal and explained what happened to me. He told me that this happened to everyone. These symptoms were very common. Even great speakers faced the same things when they started. He suggested me coming again to give a presentation for the teachers. For one month, I prepared and practiced for my presentation again and again. This time I was feeling comfortable. I gave the presentation and it was appreciated by the principal as well as the teachers. They encouraged and praised my efforts.

After a few months, our school organized a Principal’s Conference where 120 principals participated. Our principal was kind enough to invite me as a guest speaker again. I prepared and practiced for this presentation day and night. My topic of the talk was Relationships. Luckily, this went very well and was appreciated by the audience. After delivering this presentation successfully, I became more confident. I said to myself, “If I can speak in front of such a learned audience, like principals who educate others, I can now speak in front of others too.”

I started giving presentations in my firm, on various topics like Self Motivation, Personality Development, Personal Excellence and Presentation Skills. Now I always look forward to the opportunity to give presentations. This has become a passion for me. I learned that everything is possible if we have courage to take the first step. The saying goes: The journey of a thousand miles begins with one first step. Take a risk to take that first step.

When travelling abroad, your safest bet is to limit gestures as much as possible. However, you may find that your gestures happen out of habit. Understanding appropriate gestures of the country you’re visiting may prevent you from communicating the wrong message. In North America, eye contact communicates to the speaker that you’re interested and listening. In Asia, people look away to concentrate on what the speaker is saying. Taking the time to get yourself familiar with the gestures of the country you’re visiting will help you connect with the people of the foreign environment.

Gestures in Brazil

Much like the Italian culture, a Brazilian snaps his fingers(打响指)and uses exaggerated(夸张的)hand movements when stressing a statement. The sense of warmth and friendliness with each other is shown through the gesture of eye contact when communicating and standing close together in lineups or when talking to each other. Communicating a greeting is more than the gesture of a handshake, but also involves the touch of the forearm.

Gestures in China

China is affected by Confucius’ way of thinking, which is reflected through its reserved culture. You communicate a greeting in China with the gesture of a slight nod and bow. To communicate respect, you keep your head lowered. In China, the gesture of standing close during a conversation prevents having to communicate with a raised voice. A person will communicate his surprise during a conversation with the gesture of breathing in air loudly, rather than a loud outburst.

Gestures in Russia

Gestures considered common to Americans may be considered rude in Russia. The American gesture to communicate “okay”, with the forefinger and thumb touching and three fingers up, is considered rude in Russia. Looking at your watch is a rude gesture communicating impatience. Russians also feel upset about the gesture of communicating directions by pointing.

Gestures in India

Gestures used in India represent its traditional culture. In India, the gesture of holding out the hand to communicate giving or receiving must be done with the right hand as a person in India uses his left hand for washing. The gesture of communicating respect at a religious ceremony is done by removing your shoes. The proper way of communicating direction is to use either the whole hand or by using your chin. The proper form of communicating a greeting is to press the palms(手掌)together with fingers upward and say, “Namaste”.

46. In China people stand close while talking to ________.

   A. avoid a loud voice                                    B. show their surprise

   C. exchange greetings                                    D. express their respect

47. Which of the following is considered bad manners in India?

   A. Receiving gifts with the left hand.

   B. Using the whole hand to show the way.

   C. Removing shoes at religious ceremonies.

   D. Pressing the palms together upward while greeting.

48. In which country is looking at the watch considered impolite during communication ?

   A. Brazil.                 B. Russia.                     C. India.                              D. China.

49. The passage is mainly about ________.

   A. some traveling tips for visitors                  B. the advantages of using body language

   C. some gestures in communication          D. the comparison between different cultures

C

Business is often seen as the “bad guy” in environmental matters because people feel that businesses will do anything to make a profit. Unluckily, this is too often the case. Many business people, in fact, believe that they cannot make a profit and be kind to the environment at the same time. However, it does not necessarily have to be this way. Using common business strategies, companies have found ways to become environmentally friendly, or “green”, and increase their profits at the same time.

One such strategy that businesses use is known as “product differentiation.” This term means that a company advertises the fact that its product is different from other similar products. A number of environmentally friendly companies have done this successfully. For example, in marketing their products, organic food companies emphasize the organic aspect. That is, they highlight the fact that no chemicals have been used to grow the food, and so it is better for consumers’ health and for the environment. These days, many consumers are looking for products that have no negative health or environmental effects.

Another “green” business strategy that has been successful is waste reduction. Many companies have regarded waste and pollution as a necessary part of the production process. They have done little to prevent either waste or pollution, unless there are laws that force them to. However, other companies have realized that there are surely some advantages to reducing waste and pollution. Less waste and less pollution means a more efficient production process. The 3M Company in the United States is a good example of this. In 1975, it started a program that rewarded employees for successful ideas about how to reduce waste and prevent pollution. This program has helped the company pollute much less and save more than half a billion dollars.

Some companies have taken the idea of waste prevention even further and have become “zero-waste” companies. That means they produce no waste at all because everything from the production process is used or recycled. Asahi Breweries of Japan, for example, sends the waste from its beer production to farms to be used as animal feed. The plastic and cardboard pieces left over from packaging are all recycled, too.

Finally, companies can become “greener” by planning for a “greener” future. For example, two energy companies, Royal Dutch/Shell and British Petroleum, have started to invest in renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, or hydrogen energy. Shell is also working with Daimler-Chrysler, an automobile company, and the government of Iceland on a special project to make Iceland the first country with a hydrogen-based economy. Other multinational companies have also realized that global warming and climate change could hurt their business, and they have decided to cut down the amount of harmful gases that their factories produce. Of these, Dupont is one of the leaders. It aims by 2020 to reduce harmful gases by 65 percent from the 2010 amounts. It also plans to limit its energy use to 2010 levels and to use renewable sources of energy for 10 percent of all the energy it uses.

50. How can businessmen make profits without doing much harm to the environment?

   A. By carrying out some strategies.               B. By marketing their products.

   C. By competing with other companies.           D. By advertising the strengths of products.

51. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?

   A. Many companies care little about reducing waste despite the laws.

   B. All companies actively participate in the waste reduction campaign.

   C. Some companies have realized that they can benefit from less pollution.

   D. Employees in the 3M Company are rewarded for any idea about pollution.

52. Asahi Breweries is an example of companies that ________.

   A. use animal feed to make beer                      B. make no profits

   C. have reduced waste and pollution                D. produce no waste at all

53. We can infer from the last paragraph that many companies ________.

   A. stop producing harmful gases

B. are already “zero-waste” companies

C. have abandoned traditional energy resources

D. will take action to become environmentally friendly

54. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?

D

There are years that ask questions and years that answer. When I was younger, I thought that I’d soon reach a stage in life when I had all the answers. As a child, I believed that by the time I entered my late teens I would be self-assured and confident and that I’d figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I’m 18 now, and even though I’m far from being where I want to be, I’ve realized one extremely important truth: I’m never going to have all the answers.

This is something that I’ve started to realize only recently. This past year has been especially confusing for me, and has brought with it a lot of questions and doubts. Last year, I moved from Pakistan to America, just one year short of graduating from high school. The move was quite sudden and unplanned, and as a result, my university planning got disturbed. At this point, I still don’t know if I’ll be going to university or community college in the fall. I don’t know if I’ll continue to live in San Marcos this year. Everything seems uncertain and undecided.

Not only are my outer circumstances fuzzy, but I’ve also been questioning my inner-beliefs and values a lot. I don’t know what I stand for and what I want to do with my life. Usually I’m a very spiritual person, but at this point, I can’t seem to sort out my emotions or make sense of anything that is happening around me.

During the period of all this confusion, I came across a saying by Zora Neale Hurston, “There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” This statement had an instant effect on me ― it made so much sense! I felt renewed hope after reading it, and I started to see my present circumstances as an opportunity to make a change and reflect. Life is marked by periods of certainty and periods of confusion, and in times of hopelessness, it helps to remember that the answers we seek are nearer than we think. I guess this past year has been a “questioning” year for me, a year of re-evaluating and reflection.

When I look back at my life, I can observe this pattern. Periods of confusion and uncertainty are followed by years that bring with them renewed direction and purpose. At the age of 14, I went through a stage of religious confusion where I questioned everything and believed nothing. Shortly after this stage, I found inner peace. This peace was disturbed by doubts and disbelief the following year, but after a period of re-evaluation and fierce questioning, I soon found my faith again. I suppose that this pattern will remain throughout my life; there will be times when I doubt and question my purpose in life, and times when I’m confident and certain.

When I look around me, I see so many people who are a lot older than me and are still trying to figure out their lives. There are people who quit stable jobs to look for what they love well into their 50s and 60s, and there are people who move halfway across the world to explore new possibilities. They inspired people around by their rich experiences in life, their perseverance in realizing their goals and their optimism towards life. They taught us by example that it was never too old to live your dream. At any given point there are people choosing new majors, new religions, and new life paths. Change is unavoidable.

When I look around at all the present uncertainty in my life, I know that it’s part of the process of change. Life is full of confusing at disordering particular time, a particular location. Do the arranged things ten million times in the brain, step by step. Life is hard to avoid unexpected happening of surprising and pleasing things. So, I only learn to silently ask myself in mind what to do next, make right decisions and take action right away. At this point, I’m trying to find my way through this confusion, trying to find some meaning and clarity. I trust that I’ll find my answers soon.

Find Yourself

Sometimes taking a step back from your daily routine and engaging in some self-reflection can help you make sense of your place in the world. To discover your true selfno matter where you are in your journeytry these techniques.

61      And realize you might not like what you see. It can be discouraging to realize you aren’t where you want to be in life, but don’t use that excuse to stay stuck where you are. Take ownership for the person you are. In this way, you can have a better understanding of yourself.

62      One reason you may feel you’re losing touch with yourself is that you’re too busy taking care of the needs of everyone else in your life. Keep a diary of the way you spend your time for a week. When you look at how your days are divided up, you might realize how little is left for you. So schedule time on your calendar to yourself with your passions. Go back to interests and activities you’ve neglected. And take an hour a week just to think about your personal goals and how you will meet them.

63      Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, seemed to be in the right place. The former editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal was now working for Justice Sandra Day O’Connora dream job she’d planned and worked hard for. Once she realized her real dream to be a writer, she left law. Today she’s a best-selling author of four books. “Take small, concrete steps in your daily life. And keep checking in with yourself each week to make sure you’re heading in the right direction.”

64      Who you surround yourself with is who you become. Find a person who is willing to give you advice as you start to switch things up in your life. If you don’t have a friend to fill that role, consult a professional. And no matter where you find your inspiration, be open to ideas, but listen to your own heart first and foremost.

65      And not the ones who’ve gotten used to your picking up their dirty socks. We mean helping those truly in need. Spend a few afternoons a week talking with seniors at an nursing home or handing out sandwiches at a soup kitchen. Something as simple as performing five random acts of kindness a week can improve your mood and your sense of well-being. And when you feel better about yourself, you’re more able to face new challenges on the road to self-fulfillment.

. 书面表达:(满分30分)

(One possible version)

Saying no sometimes is absolutely difficult. One Sunday, I was sitting totally absorbed in going over my subjects when a friend of mine asked me to go shopping with her. I found myself getting all caught in her enthusiasm and didn’t want to refuse her. Thus we hung out for the whole day. Actually, with the final exam approaching, I hardly had any time to spare. Had I said no at that time, I would have felt more confident in the exam.

Now I come to realize the importance of saying no. We had better do what we think is right and we are willing to do. Sometimes it does not seem that bad to refuse others.
